Freezers – Which Style is Best?

The modern freezer is just what the name suggests. It is a device that usually is kept in the garage and is used for the purpose of storing food for later use. It may seem somewhat odd that we would need a freezer beyond the one that comes with the traditional refrigerator, but the advent of warehouse stores means that we simply need more space than a refrigerator provides. After all, it wasn’t really designed to hold a pack of 10 frozen pizzas, 75 burritos and 25 cans of frozen orange juice.
The modern freezer comes in two basic styles. The first is the chest freezer. Also known as the long freezer, it gets its name from its chest-like configuration. The device looks like a refrigerator turned on its side. The door is on the top. One pops it open and then can store food from end to end. Most chest freezers are just one open box without shelves.

The upright freezer is your second choice when it comes to these appliances. As the name suggests, it sits upright. It is more akin to a refrigerator in shape and format. Unlike the chest version, this one has shelves that can be moved. If you think of the freezer in your refrigerator, this is a large version.

So, which one should you buy? Well, there are pros and cons for both. The chest version is usually bigger and, surprisingly, cheaper. That being said, it is just an empty box without shelves and tends to take up a lost of space which can be a problem if your garage is small. The upright version, in contrast, has a smaller footprint and shelves. These are really the only two pros supporting it. If you have the space, the chest freezer is almost always the best choice. After all, it tends to be bigger and yet cost less.
