Installing Radiant Barrier
Radiant barriers are a great source of energy savings and improving the comfort levels of your home. Although the cost of installation varies depending on the manufacturer, you will notice significant savings in your electricity bills. The installation cost is well worth the investment during typical heating or cooling season.
Radiant barriers are installed with the reflective side facing up the vented air space. In the basic application, attic floor installation is performed. The radiant barrier sheets are placed over existing insulation in the attic. These sheets overlap each other. This allows access to wiring that might require work. Care must be taken during installation to ensure that the reflective side is facing up, and that the radiant barrier does not actually touch the insulation. The radiant barrier will transfer heat to the insulation if aluminum sheets are touching the insulation. As a result, heat will enter home during the summer and escape in winter.
Radiant barrier can be installed by attaching the foil sheets nearer to the roof. If your home is under construction, you can drape the foil sheets over rafters before the roof decking is installed. You can also attach them to the bottom of the roof deck. In this method, foil sheets are attached to the undersides of the rafters. At least 3/4 inch dead air space should be left.
Another type of radiant barrier installation is to place the barrier in the walls of the home. This works best for newly built homes or during a full retrofit of an existing home. To accomplish this, the installer sets furring strips around the wall perimeter. This separates the outer wall from the external wall structure, and “sandwiches” the radiant barrier between the outer and inner wall. There is a system of vents at the top and bottom of the interior wall. It directs heated air upwards into the attic. The heated air is finally dissipated through the attic venting system.
Water vapors can condense and freeze in colder climates. They accumulate beneath the radiant barrier and lead to disastrous results in ceilings. Therefore, a major consideration is to ensure that the attic of the home is properly ventilated. This will expel water vapors out of the attic. Many new constructions ensure proper airflow in the attic by using a system of vented roof-peaks and vented soffits.

Nutrition Notes on Weight Loss Supplements
More and more spend hundred and even thousands of dollars yearly on weight loss supplements in the hope of speeding up their metabolism. The main desire is to be attractive and accepted but it is becoming a more difficult goal to achieve. The fitness industry is booming but still a lot of people are unable to cut those fat in spite of all the exercise and diet efforts. In America, more than sixty per cent of adults are overweight and thirty per cent are considered obese. This is because: one, a lot of weight loss products promises unrealistic goals; two, dietary supplement manufacturers rely on the overweight person’s failure to survive; and three, the information about the supplements in the market are just written by themselves just to make a sell.
Although the Food and Drug Administration has successfully banned illegal marketers, some products are still available. Consumers can be deceived of the labels which claims caffeine or ephedra fee not knowing that these supplements composes of other ingredients that may pose the same health risks. These include heart and digestive problems, headaches, insomnia, and even psychological side effects.
Other supplement manufacturers say that their products contains EGCG which is a phytochemical ingredient found in green tea. This so-called component claims to speed up metabolism but in reality poses to reduce the risk of cancer. Some studies denote that it could slightly increase the potential to burn calories and now can be found in many weight loss supplements. It has good points on the other hand since the body might conform to EGCG after a period of time. Eve the weight loss benefit could sum up to 60 to 70 calories a day. This helps prevent excessive weight gain.
A few other significant effects of weight loss supplements is that it may contain ingredients that makers claim will prevent the absorption of carbohydrates. One good example is Chitosan, which appears most promising, which in fact shows no positive result in fat absorption. It could even take up to seven months for men to lose just a pound of body fat and for women, there is no fat loss at all. Thyroid supplements act as thyroid replacements help regulate and optimize the thyroid at a higher level. This they say makes the body feel like a couch potato and won’t perform the job it has to.
Since the number one reason why people eat is because they feel hungry, there is another type of ingredient that manufacturers made which increases the feeling of being full and decreases appetite, Guar Gum. However, recent studies show that it has no meaningful benefit at all to weight loss. It is ironic that manufacturers mix Psyllium that has the reputation of reducing eating and aiding weight loss for initial studies so far do not support this claim although it helps control blood cholesterol and sugar.
One of the latest innovations in the fat loss industry is by way of skin absorption. There’s a Cutting Gel, which is an epidril product by far the best selling in fat loss creams technology. Rub it where you want the fats cut. For now, it will seem safer to advise the age old remedies to excessive weight gain and that is to invest on walking shoes instead of diet supplements, go to the park and do brisk walking, go to the gym, and have a well balanced diet instead.

Install a Lamppost -2
Previous entry of this serie in DIY house work: Install a Lamppost
Dig the hole for the lamppost-about a third of its length, or according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Cover the bottom of the hole with gravel or with a layer or two of flat rocks, for drainage.
If the lamppost is wood, give it at least two coats of clear, paint table wood preservative before setting it into the hole, even if the post has been pressure treated with preservative. The extra effort and slight cost will add from 5 to 10 years to the life of the post. Let the preservative dry completely.
Connect the electrical wiring to the lamppost after the preservative is dry, and before setting the post into the hole. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for connecting the wiring to the lamppost.
With the wiring connected, set the lamppost into the hole. The lamppost should be set in concrete; you’ll need a helper to hold the post while you pour the footing.
With your helper holding the post, pour a third of a sack of concrete mix into the hole. Add water to the mix, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Stir and tamp the mix with a short piece of 1 x 3. Add another third of a sack of concrete, and repeat the mixing procedure. At this point, plumb (vertically level) the post. Then fill the hole with concrete mix and water and stir. Crown the top of the concrete with the back of a spade to slope the concrete away from the post ; the crowned concrete sheds water like a roof.
Brace the post with 2 x 4’s until the concrete sets about 2 hours. Keep the concrete damp for a week to help it cure properly.
To complete the job, fill the cable / conduit trench with dirt and connect the lamp to the power source.
If you’re replacing an old lamppost with a new one of if three’s an available outside junction box the connection is easy. Caution : flip the circuit breaker or remove the fuse that controls the outdoor junction box. Remove the cover to the junction box and connect the box’s wires to the lamp’s wires, following the lamppost manufacturer’s instructions. Use wire nuts to make the connection.
If there is no available outdoor junction box. Have an electrician install the proper wiring.
